Learning Goals
Shapping a lesson around student learning goals can be supported through the use of certain teaching strategies.
21st Century Skills
The learning goal, '21st century skills', focuses on conditioning students for the world today through exersice and reflection in communication, collarboration, technology and problem solving (Larmar et al. 2008).
Assessment
Assessments are a means in which to gather information on student understandings and misconceptions. Assessments are a tool used in the evaluation of teacher effectiveness, conceptual change, and to expose opportunities for growth. (Andrews et al., 2008)
Community Applications
Community application is the idea of making learning relevant by focusing on real world, local issues that the students can assess and work to solve through creativity, collaboration and design (Capra, 2010).
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is cultivating your students ability to look at an issue and understand it fully before passing judgement or taking action (Flew & Mcpeck, 1982).
Engaging Place
Engaging place means to teach content through the lens of the place where you are. Whether you are in a city or a rural setting, this learning goal aims at giving students a sense of place, by allowing them to understand and take ownership of what they interact with from day to day. (Kudryavtsev et al., 2012)
Inclusion
This learning goal aspires to create a classroom culture where all students are embraced and celebrated for their differences. Through inclusion, a teacher can encourage student's understanding of alternative perspectives as well as by making learning relevant to the student's life (Block, 2015)
Student Centered
This learning goal aspires to create a consultative classroom culture with students, where the students have a say in what, how and why they are learning what they are learning (McCarthy, 2015).
